Summary

Students were tasked with finding out the answer to the research question: “Who were the Afrolatinos?” Since Afrolatino populations exist in many countries and each population has a different story, students in each class selected a country to research. They created questions to guide their research. Students used a wiki organized by country to collaborate and compile information across classes. Students were aware through previous training of how to vet websites and use appropriately licensed materials to populate the wiki. Students synthesized information from the wiki to create a multimedia presentation answering the research question. Students were given the opportunity to use tools of their choice to create the presentation. Based on all of the information, students created a fictional character portraying someone who might live in that country and composed a historical fiction narrative in the native language. The presentation and story were both presented live in class.
