Three Lakes Park Project – 4225

Summary

This project integrated the second grade Langauge Arts, Science, and Social Studies curriculum as well as incorporated the technology tools that the students had utilized in their classroom. Given the authentic task: Three Lakes Park is looking to attract more children and families. It has developed a new campaign “Three Lakes: Your Neighborhood Park.” It is your job to develop an ad campaign to help increase community members visiting to the park. Your job is to highlight the wildlife and plant life that the park has to offer. Students worked collaboratively in self-selected groups of two or three students to complete this project using Discovery Box, formerly Museum Box. This lesson is Target/Ideal as the authentic task given to students led to self-directed research through questioning. Using the student planning form, students created questions and then researched the answers using Sweet Search, Three Lakes Park website and brochure. The students utilized the information they gathered to complete the other aspects of their collaborative projects.

The lesson is Target/Ideal as the students worked in self-selected groups to address the authentic task and reflected upon their roles. The groups had to decide on which tools to use and the best manner to present their work. They also determined how the work for the projet would get done by assigning roles and/or aspects of the project. The students uploaded their projects to the Museum Box website themselves. The final project was shared on Museum Box, the teacher’s blog, NList, and the staff Three Lakes Park.

The project is Target/Ideal as the authentic task allowed students to design and create a script to encourage visitors to come to the park. The students had to justify their reasoning for using certain tools as they worked to complete their project. The student planning form provided students the opportunity to reflect upon their project as they were creating.

The project is Target/Ideal as the students were given many options to create the sides for their Museum Box. Each part of the process allowed student choice with both tool and topic. The students were given the choice to utilize the following tools: Audacity, Comic Life, FlipCam, Keynote, Museum Box, Photo Booth, and Pixie.
