Submitted by: Lauren Sledzinski
Collaborators: Janet Nowlin, Geraldine Cooke
School: Hermitage Technical Center

Summary

This lesson provides students with a realistic experience as to what occurs when you drink and/or text while driving. This lesson is completely student driven. As students engage in the activities of this project, they develop a deeper understanding regarding the dangers of drunk driving and texting while driving. The students write the script, act in the scenario, investigate and treat the victims, film the event, and create a Public Service Announcement to show to all the High Schools in Henrico County. This is a collaborative project between all of the students of three Career and Technical Education classes (Criminal Justice, Emergency Medical Treatment, and Web Design).

TIPC Ratings

Students are faced with a mock situation where they need to assess and interpret the information they are given to determine the course of action they are to take. In designing the PSA students analyze the mock DUI situation to determine what research is needed and use advanced research skills to find valid and relevant information. The statistics and data gathered are included in the production of the final video product.

Students from four classes collaborate and communicate to develop a script and record video for the mock DUI scenario. Working with Henrico fire, police and other rescue personnel, groups of students participate in a reenactment of an accident scene and get first-hand experience at such a scene. A team of students records the scenario from multiple perspectives and produces the final PSA. This video is shared with other high schools throughout the county and beyond. Essential questions allow students to analyze their roles in this project and come up with suggestions for improvements.

Students use prior learning to evaluate situations occurring during the reenactment. They make decisions using higher order thinking skills to solve problems as they arise. Video production team members apply skills learned in class to select the most appropriate equipment and computer programs, evaluate film footage, and produce a final product complete with music and statistics to back up the message. Students answer the essential questions, allowing them to reflect on individual and group performance and goals to improve future scenarios.

Students design and develop the script for the DUI scenario, perform as the victims, crime scene, and EMS personnel and produce an original video depicting the events of the mock DUI. This video is to be shown at Hermitage High School and at other high schools to their students. Innovation and creativity are essential throughout this project as students assess and react to unexpected real-life occurrences. Students contemplate the pros and cons of their creativity throughout this mock DUI by answering the essential questions.
