Summary

We began by reading several articles in a Time for Kids publication. As we read each article, we determined the author’s main purpose for writing. Students also investigated the way in which the author conveyed the purpose in the article. They analyzed illustrations, pictures, captions, quotes, and vocabulary and determined how each strengthened the author’s purpose for the article. Students then chose one of the the studied articles and found a way to convey the same purpose using another media tool.

TIPC Ratings

During this lesson the teacher will model strategies to guide student investigation of author’s point-of-view. She has designed an authentic task to measure if the students use transfer this purpose into a different media. Students had to select a digital media and design a project that would correctly express the author’s purpose in a new media.

Students self-selected the article and digital media that they were going to use for this project. Groups were formed on this same basis. Once students were in groups they self-assigned jobs and worked on the task. Student groups consulted with the ITRT with any problems they had creating their project.

Students were forced to address higher order questions as they extracted the author’s purpose from the article. They then had to select a digital tool that would allow them to convey this same purpose through a different digital media.

Students developed a new digital presentation that would correctly express the author’s purpose of an article that that they had recently read. The students where using higher level questioning skills and worked in self-selected collaborative teams to construct their digital projects.
