Linear Systems Project

Summary

Systems of linear equations are a useful way to solve common problems in different areas of life. Students will work in groups to create and solve their own word problem using various methods. They will create a flipchart to display their work and present the problem to the class using ActivEngage.

TIPC Ratings

Approaching. Part of the assignment was to utilize valid data when creating their real world problem. Students researched prices, weights, etc. on the internet and applied them to develop a unique word problem. Students were required to relate their knowledge to a new situation, since a linear system is a new concept that they were recently introduced to.

Developing. This lesson is based on collaboration, and the students’ ability to plan a presentation where each student contributes meaningfully. Oral communication skills are highlighted. The teacher has established group work and group presentation norms by discussing the role of each group member.

Approaching. Students must think critically and use higher-order thinking skills when building their linear system. They have to work backwards from the solution to create the problem. Students analyze the procedure of solving the problem by reflecting on which method they prefer. They incorporate learning strategies into their presentation to their peers by explaining how to verify the answer is correct using the given information.

Developing- Teachers replace a traditionally teacher-directed style of instruction with student-led presentations. Students must create a unique word problem that is unlike the problems we studied in class. Students can draw ideas from their own interests and situations that they encounter every day. Students demonstrate proficiency in using the presentation software and Promethean board for their presentations. Students work together to plan a presentation that incorporates the strengths of each group member (i.e. one write, one narrate) with shared and different roles played in their delivery.
