Summary

Students will research their personal identity as well as an artist that explores identity in their work. Through this self study and artist research students will develop a final image that reflects their ideas of self image and how they present this image to the world around them. From this unit I want students to learn that through the process of experimentation and reflection they can create an image that reflects not just their outer appearance but also make visual reference to how they identify themselves. Students will achieve this goal by experimenting with various materials and methods of manipulating these materials in order to achieve their desired effect.

TARGET – Students will begin this project with drawing a portrait from memory relying on background knowledge of human proportion and scale of facial features given to the students in the form of a Google Presentation. Then they will experiment with various materials and methods of manipulating these materials in order to achieve their desired effect. Photoshop is also used throughout this process. In the beginning, a grid is created on a digital photo in order to create a scale enlargement. Later on, Photoshop is used as a tool to alter/combine images and plan the final composition) in relation to how they want to complete the final portrait image. Anything in the final image will be explored first and reflected on to be sure the student can achieve the highest quality in their final work. Through the process of experimentation and self reflection they will create an image that reflects not just their outer appearance but also make visual reference to how they identify themselves.
