Secondary Visual Arts

The Henrico County Art Department is dedicated to providing students with a high quality, sequential art education that promotes knowledge and technical skills, synthesis of thought, self- expression, and the personal satisfaction that only the joy of making art can bring.

Through the art curriculum, we offer students the opportunity to grow as individuals- as creative, critical, and independent thinkers, problem solvers, and life-long learners. With the foundation, students will be equipped to become productive members of any collaborative team.

We commit to offering supportive and creative environments that will help students understand the contributions that art makes to past, present, and future cultures. We strive to help students see their place in the big picture.

Our Goals as Art Educators

Teamwork: Our Art Program will work as a team at all levels, your school, within feeder patterns, and the entire HCPS Art Department.

Student Art Shows: There will be 100% participation in all central office shows, showings within your building and community. There will be a continued effort to promote our A.R.T.S. (Artists, Residents, Teachers, and Students) Festival. This event will be held each year highlighting artwork from all schools.

Opportunity: Look at all the issues as an opportunity to learn, create 21st Century Learners, provide cross curricular opportunities, and aid all HCPS schools.

Recruitment: Art Teachers will promote the arts within their classes, your school, to the feeder schools, and the community.

Assessment: As educators, we are improving student growth through our own self-awareness. Our goal is to improve student learning through the arts.

STEAM: Art teachers will begin to implement cross curricular plans that bridge partnerships between Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
