First Grade Flash

October 2, 2017     Welcome!

This week we will begin our word work sorts.  In the homework folder, you will find a menu of items for your child to choose from each night.  The developmental guideline for homework in first grade is about 30 minutes.  So work on a menu item for about 15 minutes.  The goal of word work is to have children recognize and transfer spelling patterns to their creative writing and recognize these patterns in unfamiliar words as they read.  Please select one activity from the word work menu each night  for your child to work on his/her specific pattern.

It is also very important to READ each night for at least 15 minutes.  This means that your child read a book that is a “good fit” for him/her to you.  You can also read to your child to enrich vocabulary as well as interest.  By reading a “good fit” book to you, your child is practicing skills and becoming a stronger reader!  Our intention of homework in first grade is to first and foremost read!

In math we continue to discuss patterns, particularly growing patterns.  These can be tricky for the students especially when they have to identify the part of the pattern that is growing.  In science we are observing and discussing seasonal changes in plants, people and animals.
