Glance at a Golden Week 10.14-10.18

Bitmoji ImageIt was a short week, but we packed A LOT of fun activities into the time we spent together! On Tuesday, we had a surprise visit from the Richmond Ballet! We got to see excerpts from their “Swan Lake” performance. They taught us dance moves and showed us how dancers talk with out using words. On Thursday, we met our school’s ILC (Innovative Learning Coach), Miss Capano! She showed us the components of the Henrico Learner Profile and taught us how our differences make us special! We interviewed our buddy and made a Flipgrid video to record the responses. Students really enjoyed learning about their buddy and discovering another tool on their Chromebooks!

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- This week we began new reading skill… making predictions. A prediction is a guess that you make before, during, and after reading using text or picture clues from the text. We discussed how predictions may differ when made before reading (you use the title and cover page), during reading (you use the text/pictures to guess what will happen next), and after reading (you confirm/adjust your prediction based on what really happened in the story). We had fun applying this skill with two different texts,  Grandpa’s Teeth and My Name Is Yoon. I highly recommend checking these books out for a second read at home!Writing- This week we built our writing ideas by creating scary sentences after listening to Harry and the Terrible Whatzit. This was the perfect activity for the upcoming Halloween season! Students enjoyed compiling a list of scary words and then using those scary words to write scary sentences. Next week, we look forward to choosing from one of our many ideas to write a longer passage. We will use these passages to build our writing community and introduce our AUTHOR’S CHAIR!Math- Students began the week reviewing patterns. We learned about the difference between a repeating pattern (a pattern that has objects that repeat at least 3 times or more) and a growing pattern (a pattern with number/shapes that increases in a predictable way). Students practiced finishing growing patterns on IXL.com and then put their skills to work as they created their own animated growing pattern! Check out so growing patterns in action here! We wrapped up our week with an introduction to math stations and learning how to determine the value of indiviual digits within a two-digit number, otherwise known as place value. We will continue our exploration of place value with two-digit numbers as well as begin rounding and comparing numbers.Science- This week we began learning about how our Earth changes daily and over long periods of time from weathering and erosion. Students learned that weathering occurs with rocks/minerals are broken down by water, wind, or ice. Erosion occurs with rocks/soil are carried away and moved to a new place. Be sure to ask your students to show you the hand movements and song we learned to help us remember the difference between weathering and erosion!

NEWS & REMINDERS:

  • 4.5 WEEK MATH SUMMATIVE: The 4.5 week Math Summative that students took last week was sent home in your child’s yellow folder today. This assessment was created by the county as a checkpoint for the material learned up to this point. Students took the test on paper first and then transferred their answers to PowerTest, which is the program we will be using for testing moving into the coming quarter. There were two questions included on the test that had not been covered yet. You will notice that these questions were crossed off the test. Those questions were omitted from the grade, regardless of the answer that was chosen. Please be sure to review any missed questions at home. These tests are great resources for review, so keep them in a safe place to review later!
  • BOOK OR TREAT: Our Book or Treat event is quickly approaching on Tuesday, October 29th! Students may come to school in their costumes and trick or treat for fun book related items! This is also the time that you can come pick up your Papa John’s pre order pizza! More information about our Papa John’s pizza fundraiser can be found in Mrs. Broudy’s Tiger Talk announcements. Paper order forms will also be coming home in folders next week. If you can, please be sure to participate in this fundraiser, as the proceeds will go towards our school Brainpop Jr. subscription. This is a resource that we use with our students for many Science, Social Studies, and Math units!
  • BIG BLAST: Be on the look out for the Big Blast flyer that was sent home on Thursday. All students are invited to attend! Students that had $75 in donations will receive a Kona Ice treat. Our Big Blast time is scheduled for 12:30 on Wednesday, October 30th, which is during our normally scheduled recess time. Please email me if you do want your child to participate in this event.
  • STEAM DAY: As a reminder, our next 1/2 day is Monday, October 28th. We are looking forward to our SECOND STEAM day of the year! We will be exploring weathering and erosion!

Have a marevlous weekend!
