Glance at a Golden Week 9.30-10.4

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- We continued to focus on making connections this week. Students enjoyed connecting to fiction stories (The Most Magnificent Thing and Scardey Squrriel) and we branched out to include some nonfiction text  by listening to Chamelons Are Cool. We will be wrapping up our connections unitwith more fiction and nonfiction text next week!

Writing- This week we worked on generating ideas for writing by making lists. Students created a list of their friends and activities that they like to do together. Our lists helped us write a story titled “My Friend”.

Students also learned the importance of adding details to their writing. We listened to Miss Tizzy and visualized the setting of the story. We then listened to the story a second time without the author’s descriptive words. Boy did we notice a difference!

Math- We began our week with a unit on even & odd numbers. Students worked with manipulatives to find that even numbers can be split equally into two groups and odd numbers always have one left over after spliting into two groups. Get some extra practice with even & odd with these games! Number Ninja Left Turn Otto Students also had a chance to log in to their Mobymax accounts to get some additional practice with skip counting & even/odd numbers. You can head to Mobymax at home by clicking on the “Clever” link to the right. Students logins are the same as their computer login at school. Email me if your child cannot remember their login information.

Science- We had our FIRST STEAM day this past Monday! Students were tasked to engineer a building that could withstand “hurricane force” winds. Using toothpicks, playdoh, and index cards students brainstormed, collaborated, and built structures that had to stand the test of a fan (aka hurricane winds). I am proud to announce that we were ALL successful! With the time we had left, students were challenged to adjust their structure to hold up to flood waters. This task was a bit harder than the first, but led to some GREAT discussions!
