Glance at a Golden Week 9.16-9.20

Bitmoji ImageGoodbye Summer, Hello Fall! I am looking forward to welcoming in fall with you all on Monday.

Starting next week, I will begin my individual Back to School conferences. I am excited to chat with each of you to discuss our goals for this school year! Be sure to view my Back to School presentation and use the Sign Up Genius at the end to select the date and time of your conference, as well as leave a comment to say what type of conference you would like to have (phone, Google video chat, or in person).

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- This week we wrapped up our discussions on fluency and put on our Word Detective hats! We have been on the hunt for context clues, which are what good readers use to help them find the meaning of new or unknown words. We were word detectives in the book “Owl Moon” to figure out what the word owling means. Image result for context clues anchor chartWriting– We have been looking at different way to generate ideas for writing. One way to get ideas for writing is to draw quick sketches to write about later. This week we made quick sketches during a walking tour of the school and brainstorming our favorite things to do with family with our buddies. I am excited to see what kind of writing we come up with from our quick sketches!

Math- This week we dove in to skip counting by 10’s and 2’s to the number 120. Students worked in groups to manipulate unifix cubes into groups of 10 and 2. We brainstormed things that you naturally count in groups of 10 (such as dimes & $10 bills) and 2 (shoes, eyes, ears, legs, hands, etc.). To wrap up our week, we challenged ourself to count BACKWARDS by 10’s and 2’s from 120! Science- Our science unit has us learning about different types of extreme weather! Students learned about tornados, hurricanes, floods, droughts, and thunderstorms this week. We had many interesting discussions and had very inquistive questions about each of these types of extreme weater. Be on the lookout for an extreme weather study guide that will go home in Monday’s homework packet!
