Glance at a Golden Week 11.12-11.16

What a busy, but MEMORABLE week! I don’t know about y’all…but I think we certainly earned this weekend! Check out all the fun things we got up to this week below!

On Monday, we celebrated students’ exceptional behavior in Quarter 1 with a visit to Hermitage HS to see the play Junie B Jones Is Not a Crook. Way to go, Tigers!  Keep displaying those PAW values! We honored Veterans’ Day with a patriotic performance from our fourth graders and a visit from Mr. Brown, fifth grade teacher Miss Brown’s father.  Mr. Brown shared about his career in the army and enlightened students about the meaning of Veterans’ Day, how uniforms have changed over the years, and even taught us to “Hooah!”  Thank you Mr. Brown and all active military and veterans for your service!

We took a memorable trip to Luray Caverns and James Madison University on Wednesday. At Luray Caverns, we walked through over a mile of incredible underground caverns.  Students learned how this natural wonder formed and admired the amazing stalactites, stalagmites, columns, mirrored pools, and more!At JMU, students enjoyed lunch amongst the college students in the dining hall then toured the campus.  Students had an opportunity to ask current JMU students about college life.  We were impressed with their thoughtful questions and proud to hear them already thinking about their futures!

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- We  completed our unit on nonfiction text structures. As a reminder, nonfiction text structures are ways that the author organizes information to better convey their thoughts. The structures we studied this week were cause/effect and problem/solution. The students analyzed nonfiction text to locate signal words for each structure, identified the type of structure used, and discussed how these structures help us to better understand their meaning.

Writing- We dove into our multi-paragraph writing project by prewriting and rough drafting our introduction paragraph to explain our favorite place to eat. Students will begin working on the body paragraphs of this essay when we return from break!

Social Studies-The students began to learn the states and capitals of the Southeast region! We learned a song and created dance moves to help us remember each state. We started creating our own Google Map to mark each capital in the Southeast region. This map will be an ongoing project as we study each region in depth. As your student to show them their map and quiz them on the capitals in the Southeast region! Math & Science–  Visit Miss Capano’s blog to read what students did in math and science this week!
