Glance at a Golden Week (12.11-12.15)

We had so much fun today celebrating the end of the 2017 school year! Now, we’re ready to welcome 2018! We started our morning with student basketball game & silly teacher games.

We put our creativity and engineering skills to the test with a cookie package challenge! Students had to create a decorative cookie package to protect 4 cookies from breaking after being dropped from a 3ft using only 2 sheets of card stock, masking tape, bubble wrap, ziplock bags, and scrap paper. We had some amazing ingenuity and engineering taking place as pretty much everyone was able to create a package that saved their cookies! They most effective cookie package included a working scrap paper parachute and a ziplock baggie landing pad!

Thank you to everyone who sent in treats to make our afternoon Winter Party a huge success! After a day of fun, excitement, and creativity we enjoyed our treats while relaxing and watching The Polar Express!

I wish you all a very happy holidays, a relaxing Winter Break, and a joyous New Year! I look forward to seeing everyone in 2018!

THIS WEEK IN…

Reading- We dove back into fiction text as we explored character traits! We did a book hook (reading only the first could of chapters of a book) of Carl Hiaasen’s Hoot. This captivating book takes place in a Florida town and involves a transient young boy named Roy, a bully named Dana, and a mysterious boy who runs through the town with no shoes. Using our character traits chart, we choose appropriate words to describe the characters and provided evidence to explain those traits. When thinking about character traits, ask your student What attitude did the characters have? Show evidence to support your thinking. Look at this dialogue. What does it tell you about the characters? Describe the main characters from your story.

Writing- We completed their body paragraphs for the hamburger essay. This is a five paragraph essay focused on what the students want to change about Trevvett. They have worked to develop reasons as to why they want their change to occur. When reviewing the writing process, ask your student What are the parts of a multiparagraph composition? What are the parts of a body paragraph?

Social Studies

We identified the states and capitals in the Southeast region of the United States. Please encourage your students to continue practicing the song and movements, as it has helped them immensely with memorization! When reviewing the Southeast region, ask your student What are the states in the southeast region of the United States? What are the capitals of the states in the southeast region of the United States?
