Happy Friday Families!

We had a GREAT time on our trip to Henricus Park today! The weather was perfect! We got to see, hear, and feel many of the things that the Powhatan Indians experienced long ago. What a great learning experience! I highly recommend going as a family if you ever have the opportunity. Please be sure to check out our pictures and videos from this amazing trip!

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to conferences on Wednesday. If you would like to meet and you missed your time or  were unable to attend, please feel free to email me to set up a time before or after school. 🙂

Here are somethings that will be going on in the upcoming weeks…

  1. Our Quarter 1 Awards recognition will be Tuesday,  November 22 from 12:30-12:45 in our classroom. Please feel free to join us as we celebrate our hard work and accomplishments from this nine weeks!
  2. Report cards will be sent home Tuesday, November 22nd.
  3. We will be taking our Word Study quiz on Monday…so you have an extra two days to study! With all of the excitement from the field trip, I decided it was best to wait til Monday to make sure we were all fresh and focused to show what we know! 🙂
  4. This week you received a bright green sheet explaining a new reading website that we are using in class, called Read Theory. This website is replacing our use of RAZKids and is completely FREE! Students can login to read a leveled passage and answer comprehension questions for each text. The more the student reads and the more questions they answer correctly will earn them badges of recognition. The site will adjust the students reading levels and difficulty of passages based on the how well they do on the comprehension questions. Please use this amazing tool from home to help build your students reading skills.
  5. Reading has us determining the importance and main idea of non-fiction texts, such as menus, fliers, pamphlets, “how to” directions, and recipes. We will also be reading Science based texts about animal habitats, which will be our next unit of study after we finish learning about the Native Americans. You can help your child with this reading skill by asking questions such as:
    • What is this passage mostly about?
    • Why did the author write this text?
    • What is the topic of this passage?
    • What could be another title for this passage?
  6. Math has us expanding our new knowledge of place value by comparing two sets of 2 digit and 3 digit numbers by using greater than, less than, or equal to. Head to the Math section of the 2nd Grade Curriculum Websites tab for review games.
  7. In Social Studies we will be moving from the Powhatan Indians to the Lakota Indians of the Plains region. Continue to use your study guides for review!
  8. We are so thankful for the support that you all provide from home! To show our gratitude for your hard work, there will be NO word study words,  sight words, or homework next week! We hope that you enjoy your time with family and loved ones over Thanksgiving break! 🙂

Have a great weekend!
