Math ASOL question and response
- 8M-PSPFA 2 The student will : (SOL 8.15) a) solve algebraic expressions using simple addition and subtraction, and
- HSM-EI 1 The student will (SOL A.4) a) solve an algebraic expression using subtraction.
The questions have been about the word “expression(s)” used in the ASOL. Teachers have been concerned that you cannot solve an algebraic expression and that it should be “equation” instead. After talking with the Math staff here at VDOE and DLM, the teachers are correct in that the word should be “equation” verses “expression”. DLM will be doing some edits on these but I do not know when they will be completed. But they have said that we can move forward with the teachers’ interpretation of what it should be. I have been told that the likely edit to those two ASOL will be to either “solve for algebraic equations” or “evaluate expressions”.
