HAPPY SPRING!

We have had a great week! In fourth grade we continued working on reading to make inferences. We looked at a nonfiction text about a devastating fire at The Triangle Factory in 1911. Students learned of the employees concerns and complaints and how the factory owners did nothing to support them. There were terrible working conditions and they were also not prepared for emergencies like a fire! We talked about the way this fire impacted history and caused change in many people’s lives. We also discussed text features and main idea by looking at each subheading of the text and finding details to support the main idea. In English, we started talking about opinion writing. We reviewed the difference between fact and opinion and looked at two texts about apples– one informational and one opinion. Students then worked with a group to write their own opinion piece about a food that they have to convince their audience is the BEST FOOD EVER! In VA Studies, we wrapped up the Civil War! Students wrapped up projects on events from the civil war where they created a google slides presentation to share with the class and a 3D visual to accompany it. They worked really hard on these. Check instagram for updates!
In Fifth grade, we wrapped up figurative language and started discussing CAUSE AND EFFECT! We will continue this next week as well. We are discussing how Cause and Effect can be singular or more like a domino effect. We looked at some video and read some informational text about the causes and effects of hurricanes! Next week we will look at the Great Pacific Garbage patch and the effect it is having on the environment. In English, we also started opinion writing. We brainstormed opinions to popular debates (should 5th graders have cell phones, should we wear uniforms, should kids get an allowance). Each group brainstormed BOTH sides of each argument and we discussed how everyone has an opinion and you MIGHT even support some parts of both sides. We will move forward with writing our own opinion pieces next week! In SS, we are wrapping up the Midwest with PROJECTS DUE ON THE 26th!! We will present these and then move on after spring break to a new region!!

NEXT WEEK! We have a very busy week but we will continue to learn about:
FOURTH READING: Inferences
FOURTH ENGLISH: Opinion Writing
FOURTH VA Studies: Reconstruction after Civil War

FIFTH READING: Cause and Effect
FIFTH ENGLISH: Opinion Writing
FIFTH SS: Midwest wrap up!
