Week of April 23 – 26

Hello everyone!  I hope you all had a nice long weekend!  The students did a fabulous job at the recorder concert last week!  They should be so proud of their performance!  🙂

*Important Announcements This Week*

*Earth Week:  Earth Day was Monday!  This week our school will be celebrating.  Below is the theme for 3 of the days this week:

  • Tuesday – wear green
  • Wednesday – wear blue
  • Thursday – wear brown

*MAP Testing:  Everyone did a great job on the Reading MAP test last week.  I am so proud of their hard work and efforts, and that they took their time.  This week we will take the Math MAP test on Wednesday 4/24.  Please have your child eat a good breakfast and get to school on time in order to do his or her best.

*Field Day:  This Friday, 4/26 is Field Day!  Everyone is looking forward to this fun event!  Information went home about 2 weeks ago about Mr. Grey needing volunteers. Sign-ups are happening on MySchoolAnywhere. If you are planning on attending Field Day, please consider volunteering some of your time.  Since Field Day will be different this year, here is some information that Mr. Grey provided in “The Buzz” newsletter to help you understand what it will be like:

  • Field Day 2019 will be an all-day event with grade levels and classes rotating around to multiple activities inside and outside of the school building. The activities are:
  1. Field Events at the Short Pump Park football field (next door to the school)
  2. Sidewalk Games on the sidewalk leading up to Short Pump Park
  3. Fun Run activity on the track behind the school
  4. Kids Heart Challenge (Jump Rope for Heart) in the gymnasium inside the school
  5. Taekwondo Training Session in the cafeteria inside of the school

Each grade level will be rotating to each activity at different times and has a lunch built in to their schedule. Students have the option to bring in their own lunch or order bagged lunches from the cafeteria. Last week you all received a note home from the cafeteria staff about orders for lunches.

I will let you know before Friday where the Fourth Grade will be eating lunch on Field Day so that you can join us for lunch. We look forward to a fabulous Field Day on Friday!

*Please help your child have a wonderful day by making sure he or she wears sneakers, brings a water bottle, and puts on sunscreen at the beginning of the day.  Thanks for your help!

*Spring Carnival:  Information went home on Friday about the Spring Carnival that SPES will have this year. Please consider signing up for this fun event because we can’t have it unless we have volunteers to help. Sign-ups are on the MySchoolAnywhere site.

*Field Trip:  We will be visiting the Virginia Museum of History & Culture on Tuesday, 4/30.  Field Trip permission slips went home on Friday.  If you haven’t done so already, please return the signed slip as soon as possible. Last week I chose 2 names to be our chaperones for the trip.  Thank you to Mr. Rassiwala and Mrs. Bell for joining us as chaperones. If you were not chosen, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for offering to be a chaperones.

*What Are We Learning In Class?*

*Reading:

This week we will review the concept of multiple meaning words. We will analyze dictionary entries and decide which meaning of a word was used in the text. We will also practice analyzing the parts of speech in the dictionary entry and writing sentences using the word correctly based on the part of speech.  During small group rotations, students will meet with me in small group and we will continue our strategy work using leveled texts.

We will continue with our word study unit this week and have our Word Study Test on Thursday, 4/25.

*Math:

This week we will work on elapsed time. I will teach students a strategy for determining elapsed time. Ask your child to tell you about the song that we used to help us with this skill – “Stop, in the name of time!”  Students will complete an elapsed time assessment on Thursday 4/25.

*Social Studies:

We will have our next virtual lesson with the Virginia Museum of History & Culture on Monday.  Then the class will take the VS.9 Test on Wednesday, 4/24.

*Science:

This week we will begin our final unit in science which will be about plants.  On Thursday we will discuss plants that make seeds and plants that don’t make seeds. We will also review the basic plant structures and their functions.

Have a great week!

-Mrs. Jacobsen
