Week of April 15 – 19

*Important Announcements This Week*

*Recorder Concert:  On Tuesday 4/16 we have our Recorder Concert at 7:00 PM.  Students are supposed to come to school at 6:50 PM and be dressed in nice clothes. Mrs. Garcia has explained her expectations for clothing, and it was also included in the letter that was sent home several weeks ago. If you plan on arriving earlier than 6:50 to get a good parking spot or seat, please have your child stay with you until 6:50. Students will not be allowed up in their classrooms until 6:50 pm.  We will keep our recorders at school on Tuesday afternoon so your child will not need to remember to bring it with them at night.  We are so excited to show you our performance!  It is going to be a great evening. In case your child hasn’t told you, our class will be standing in the middle / right-hand part of the stage.

*Half Day 4/19 & No School 4/22:  A note went home last week reminding families that this Friday is a half-day, with dismissal beginning at 11:40 am. If your child’s transportation will be different on Friday, please be sure to send in a note to let us know.  In addition, there is no school on Monday, 4/22.

*MAP Assessments:  As a reminder, students will take the Reading MAP test on Thursday, April 18th and the Math MAP test on Wednesday, April 24th.  The students have been working on their growth skills in class, using both the Reading and Math sections of “My MAP Learning Path” on Study Island.  Thank you for encouraging your child to work on this at home also, if possible.

If you are planning on attending Field Day, please consider volunteering some of your time.

*Field Trip:  We will be visiting the Virginia Museum of History & Culture on Tuesday, 4/30.  Field Trip permission slips went home on Friday.  If you haven’t done so already, please return the signed slip as soon as possible. I will be pulling names from a hat on Friday for chaperones.  Thank you so much to all of the parents that have volunteered to be a chaperones.

*What Are We Learning In Class?*

*Reading:

This week we will continue with the complex skill of summarizing. This week we will focus on nonfiction texts and we will use the strategy of “boxes and bullets” which helps students focus on the main idea of the text and supporting details that are also found in the text.  During small group rotations, students will meet with me in small group and we will continue our strategy work using leveled texts.  Students will also read-to-self, work on their writing, and practice their comprehension independently.

Students will take their Word Study Test on Tuesday, 4/16.  This test will cover the words we learned last week.  Then on Wednesday of this week we will continue word study with a new feature in our groups.  The test for the new word study words will be next Thursday, 4/25.

*Math:

Students will take the Patterns Test on Monday, 4/15.  All week as we worked on patterns I have stressed the importance of students writing on their patterns.  I hope that when I collect students’ papers after the assessment that each child’s paper will be full of lots of work.

During the rest of the week we will work on strategies for understanding equalities and properties. We will use calculators and learn how to determine if 2 sides of an equal sign are equal. We will also spend time understanding the difference between the commutative property and the associative property.  Students will take an equalities and properties assessment on Friday 4/19.

*Social Studies:

We will focus on our new VS.9 unit about Virginia in the 20th and 21st Century.  This week we will learn about some important people of the 20th and 21st Century that were from Virginia.  There are 8 people to learn in this unit, so please check in with your child to make sure he or she is studying this information in the notes.  Students will take the VS.9 Test on Wednesday, 4/24.

*Science:

No science this week.

Have a wonderful week!
