What’s in the Box?

Hallie Wilson, a senior in CFA’s Visual Arts program, wondered just that. Last year she was given an assignment to use a box in a creative way. While glancing at the huge color printer in her art class, she got an idea and ran with it. What if little people were inside furiously painting pages as they came out of the printer?  And so she created just that. The single project won a Scholastic Gold Award. This year she decided to expand on that same idea and created a series called “Technology People” which includes a sewing machine, microwave, record player, television, printer, lamp, blender and computer. The series won her the  2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Gold Medal . We’re so proud of Hallie! Check out her story in the RTD.

They Said “YES!”

It all began in the fall of 2018. Interested students flocked to Open Houses about Specialty Centers in Henrico County and took in  hours of information. The journey began to help make their decision of where they would spend their high school years. After a detailed application was completed and sent in, 236 students showed up at Henrico High School on Saturday, February 2, 2019, to audition for Center for the Arts. With all auditions done and applications completed, CFA’s faculty and guest adjudicators began the difficult process of evaluation and selection. On March 8th the selected students were notified, and 81 have said, “YES!” to spending the next four years with us at Center for the Arts at Henrico High School. We are so excited to welcome all of you into the CFA family! The next time we see you will be at New Student Orientation at 7PM on Tuesday, May 14th. If you haven’t filled out your course forms and turned those in, do that right away. If you still have your transportation form, we’ll need that too. We want to make sure everything’s ready when you join us in the Fall of 2019. CONGRATULATIONS!

What You Don’t See!

Every event here at CFA needs so many people working together to make it happen. Many people you never see. This particular post is about a whole group of people who work tirelessly in the shadows to support all of our students and staff at Henrico Center for the Arts. They are the FCFA or Friends of Center for the Arts. The FCFA is our Booster organization, if you will. You’ve heard of Band Boosters, Athletic Boosters. They are Art Boosters. They are made up of parent volunteers and they do everything from raising money to working concessions at events and shows, to providing dinners and snacks to our students when they are rehearsing, and much more! Many of the things we need to let our students have a quality learning experience have been gifts of FCFA. The new soundboard, LED lights, and cameras for our Visual Arts students are just a few of the many things they have contributed. We at CFA couldn’t do what we do without them, and we can’t thank them enough. If you would like to know more about the FCFA or are interested in volunteering, please go to their website, http://www.friendsofcfa.com/.

CFA Experience Day a HUGE success!

On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, Henrico’s Center for the Arts  hosted students from all over the county. The students were here to participate in CFA’s Experience Day, the Center’s version of the shadowing experience. Each had been selected to attend after applying and auditioning on February 1st in the areas of Dance, Musical Theatre, Theatre or Visual Arts. An invitation was sent out with their selection email last Friday, and Tuesday 34 students and their parents had a day at the Center to see what it would be like to be a student here. The morning started with a greeting from Dr. Poxon, our CFA Director.

Students and their parents then took a tour of Henrico and the CFA classrooms. After returning from the tour Mr. Dye’s Musical Theater Class treated everyone to a rousing rendition of Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’

after which parents and students split, parents to have a question and answer session with our director, principal, guidance counselors and Friends of CFA President and students to individual classes to experience first hand the discipline in which they were chosen. The day came to an end with a pizza lunch provided by Friends of CFA (CFA’s parent booster organization) and a chance for the students to show everyone what they had done in their classes from art to performance. One thing is sure, parents and students left knowing what it’s like to attend Center for the Arts . One student already made his decision as he left saying, “I’ll see you in the fall!”
