Review: NCAA Football

by Brandon Ingram

NCAA Football 2013 isn’t just any other game: it gives the controller a realistic feel thanks to a number of improvements. The game modes and presentation, however, make it feel too similar to NCAA Football 2012.

All the new tweaks to NCAA Football 13 make the game better than expected. NCAA Football 13 has over 400 new catches. In other tweaks, the defender can’t swat the ball away while he’s not looking and the controller can abandon a play after the snap of the ball.

One new mode is the Heisman Mode. One of ten former Heisman winners can be placed on any team during a modern-day season, giving the controller the chance to relive one of the ten best seasons in college football history.

In another game improvement, the quarterback cannot run 20 yards, throw the ball at a receiver who isn’t even looking for it and have the receiver make a highlight reel catch. Now, when the quarterback hikes the ball, a new drop back kicks in, which doesn’t allow the quarterback to go too far, and when the controller is ready to throw the ball, the pass has to be to a receiver with clear button icons.

Even with all these improvements, the game is still too similar to last year’s game.

The Road to Glory mode is the same as last year. Also, Online Dynasty is just about the same: create custom conferences, run a league from the road and sign coaches. None of the teams’ new jerseys are on the game, and the backs of jerseys do not have player names. These modes make it feel as if NCAA Football 13 is actually NCAA Football 12, just with a different cover person on the game.

Despite some of the same presentations and game modes, NCAA Football 13 is still fun to play. The changes to the game outweigh the mistakes. Those $60 are worth giving up because this is the most realistic college football game to come out yet.
