Review: Hotel Transylvania

by Kristen Ellis

Hilarious and original, the animated film, “Hotel Transylvania,” keeps the audience laughing. Some of the humor is juvenile, however, such as werewolf pups peeing on furniture.

Still, the all-star cast makes up for it. Adam Sandler plays a different kind of Count Dracula. Instead of a scary bloodsucker, Dracula is a loving, over-protective father of his daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez). The first scene takes place in 1895 as Dracula changes baby Mavis’ diaper.

The movie progresses through stages of Mavis’ very long childhood until the present when she is about to turn 118. This is the time her dad has promised she can go into the human world, and monsters arrive to celebrate at Dracula’s hotel.

Birthday guests include Frankenstein (Kevin James), the Invisible Man (David Spade) and the werewolf (Steve Buscemi) with his large family. The chaos ensues.

The plot starts moving when a human named Jonathan (Andy Samberg) enters the hotel. Dracula dresses Jonathan up as a monster to get him out of the hotel, but it’s harder than he expected, especially when Dracula’s worst nightmare—Mavis meeting a human—happens.

It’s love at first sight when Mavis and Johnny “zing”—which only happens once in a lifetime. Dracula attempts several times to get rid of Johnny who is competing with Dracula for Mavis’s attention. The highlight is when Johnny and Dracula race on tables. They bond over this experience, and Dracula learns what fun really is.

The action picks up at Mavis’s 118th birthday party. The events that follow send the audience into shock.

The animation of “Hotel Transylvania” is subpar to bigger studios like Disney and Pixar, but it is still decent. While some of the humor is childish, adults may still find themselves laughing. Kids will love “Hotel Transylvania,” which is entertaining and cute. It’s worth $10.50 for a ticket.
