Band marches to beat of new director

New band director Christopher Moseley brings six years of experience to the job.

Mr. Moseley taught for two years at Henderson Elementary School and more recently for four years at Huguenot High School.

“My goal is to help each student develop her or his music potential and performance ability while serving both the school and community,” Mr. Moseley said. “The VHS music program is designed to lead each student towards the goal of becoming a polished, musically literate performer.”

Mr. Moseley attended Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he played in the band. The band performed on “The Ellen Degeneres Show,” and the talk show host praised their talents.

Later he performed in the movie “Drumline” in the scene at the Southern Classic. He has played at Disneyland during their parade and for Quincy Jones, the producer of the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” He has his own band, the Quint Essential Jazz Ensemble, which performs at the Hippodrome Theatre, Sycamore Lodge and the Second Street Festival in Jackson Ward.

But being a band director is his first love.

“I knew I wanted to be a band director since middle school,” Mr. Moseley said.  Mr. Mosely and his wife have a three-year-old daughter and a son on the way. He said he would love for them to share his love for music.

“I love music. Life without music is pointless,” Mr. Moseley said. “Try to spend 24 hours without any type of music; it’s impossible. I suggest that all children get into something musical because statistics have proven that it enhances learning.”

Senior drum major Joseph Keeles said Mr. Moseley “is easier to get along with [than the previous band teacher] because he is more understanding.”

Junior saxophonist Terry Bell said that Mr. Moseley is strict, but the band might need someone to put his foot down to whip the band into shape.

“I want to establish a level of discipline and commitment to our school,” Mr. Moseley said, “and we want to work on building school spirit and really taking ownership of our school. We need to pay attention to details and take it to the next level.”
