Lady Blue Devils defeat district rivals

by Asia McFadden

After losing its first games against several district rivals, the JV softball team (12-4-1) went on to beat each district team in their second meeting of the season.

Sophomore pitcher Tyler Cable said the team was not where it wanted to be in March, but it improved significantly over the season.

“Now we nearly slaughter every team we play,” Tyler said.

The girls beat non-district rival Hermitage (20-7) in the first game of the season.

“I was thrilled when we played Hermitage,” sophomore co-captain and second basemen Meghan Grainer said. “We ended up winning, and we only knew we could get better.”

“We played Hanover and lost, but we played a really good game,” sophomore co-captain and catcher Abbey Stoneman said.

The team started the game strong, but could not hold onto the lead.

“We were up at the beginning, but we had one bad inning. Then we kept trying to hold up, but they caught up to beat us 10-9,” Meghan said.

The first game against Glen Allen was also a loss for the Blue Devils.

“We worked and worked hard that game, and when we lost and realized we had another opportunity to beat them, then the next time we did,” Meghan said

After losing to Atlee, a team the Lady Blue Devils felt they could beat, the girls regrouped before the next match up.

The next time the team played Atlee they won.

“We finally battled out an opponent,” Abbey said.  “It was a good game.”
