Review: Gone

by Katie Carns

On the surface the thriller “Gone” is entertainingly mysterious and daunting, but it is ultimately nothing but forgettable.

Jill (Amanda Seyfried), who has been deemed mentally unstable after losing both parents in an accident, claims that a serial killer abducted her, dragged her into the woods and trapped her in a hole where he supposedly schemed to kill her along with countless other young women. When Jill’s younger sister unexpectedly goes missing years later, Jill is certain it is the same kidnapper. With no help from the doubting police, Jill is forced to unravel the mystery of her missing sister on her own.

When the story line falters, Seyfried’s performance makes up for it. The casting of a petite, pretty girl for a protective and determined hero creates an interesting contrast that shows Seyfried’s ability to take on a character.

The intention of the film is to create suspense by making the audience wonder if Jill is in fact crazy. This technique is, however, ineffective because it is clear from the start that she is not.  The ending is probably meant to leave the audience asking questions, but the only question they will be asking is “Why did I come see this movie?”

Some advice is to save the money and just watch the commercials or wait until it airs on television.
