Lesson Summary

In this science and language arts lesson, the students work collaboratively in small groups to create multimedia nonfiction e-books about animals and their habitats. After conducting extensive research, they use the programs BookCreator or Wixie to create these instructional e-books. These e-books are broadcast to the entire school population of grades K-2 to educate them about animals and their habitats.

Rating:Approaching – Explanation: The students created their own research questions prior to doing the research. They researched multiple sources of information and decided which sources to use to answer their posted questions.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students self-selected their groups and worked together to determine group roles and a set of norms for expected behavior and cooperation. The groups worked together to determine the best ways to display information to each other as well as the best way to share their finished product with the rest of the community. The students performed checks throughout the project to see if they were keeping to their established norms and did a final reflection on how they think their team worked together and what changes they would have made.

Rating: Not observed – Explanation: This was not the focus of the lesson.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The students made their own decisions when creating their e-books without use of template or example. They were give a set of must-haves and then free reign to create as they wanted. The students performed a self-reflection on their final product to see what they thought was successful and what they would change the next time they do a project like this.
