Lesson Summary

When Geometry teacher Bryan Cole reached out to Spanish teacher Maria Andueza about the difficulty his ELL students were having in his class due to language barriers, the two decided to team up to create a Spanish-language study aide for Geometry. Spanish students formed pairs, divided the county’s online Geometry curriculum into 45 manageable sections, and each pair translated a section into Spanish. Some groups went further by adding specific vocabulary lists, Spanish-language videos and other elements to further help with the learning. All of the curriculum was collected on a single Google Site that the students built collaboratively. This site was then shared with the ELL geometry students to help them in their studies. In addition, the Spanish students also wrote letters to the ELL students offering their encouragement and welcoming their questions. Mr. Cole reports that he has seen an improvement since the introduction of this new resource.

Rating:Approaching – Explanation: Students consulted existing geometry curriculum resources provided by the county, but extended that work to identify other resources that would be helpful in learning the concepts. Once collected and organized, students then translated these resources (or identified worthy resources already in translation) and organized the resources on a class-built Google Site for students in the Geometry ELL class to use as a study aid.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students worked collaboratively inside and outside of class to complete the translation page for their given concept. Students decided on the most appropriate tools and methods to communicate and track the completion of the work, and they reflected on their role in the translation work as part of the final assessment for the project.

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students had to justify the choices they made in translation, including: the content they and specific resources they chose to translate, the arrangement and presentation of the resources, and the specific choices in translation that they made.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students created meaningful, authentic work that will be used by other students to further their own learning.
