Lesson Summary

First graders review their understanding of economic services (SOL 1.7) while learning basic principles of animation and audio recording in this activity. The lesson begins with a discussion about goods and services and the differences between them. Students provide examples of each with teacher guidance. The teacher displays picture books or online photos of various jobs that provide services (policemen, doctors, barbers, teachers, firemen, etc). The class discusses their uniforms and the tools they use. Next, students choose a service to illustrate, and they go to ABCYa! Animate. The teacher models a quick animation, demonstrating how it is a series of drawings where something changes in each picture to show movement. In this case, the object that changes is the character’s mouth. The students draw the first picture of their service provider, being sure to include aspects of their job, such as a uniform or tools. Next they press the CopyCat button to make a copy of the picture. They delete the mouth and draw another mouth in a different shape. Some students may add teeth or a tongue for variety. They repeat this process until there are several mouth shapes. When the Play and Loop buttons are pressed, it looks like the person is talking. In order to add the voice, students export their animation as a .gif file, then upload it to WeVideo and record a voiceover.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating:Developing – Explanation: The teacher provides books and online images for research. The students use the images to help them draw accurate animations. The teacher points out that books are more reliable than online images.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Developing – Explanation: The students worked individually on the animations but helped each other with the audio recordings. They published their animations online so that they could learn from each other.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Developing – Explanation: The students determined how to clearly show a service in their animation by what the character was wearing or holding or saying. They also had to figure out how to use a variety of digital tools for animation and audio recording.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: The students chose the service they wanted to illustrate and thought of their own sentences to say. They were encouraged to add creative elements to their animations and to take risks.
