Lesson Summary

Students were given a project to complete during our recent Animal Habitats unit. The project included students choosing a habitat to create and an animal from that habitat. The project included them coming to the library to do research on their habitat and animal. Several databases as well as nonfiction books were used. After researching, students had a choice of how they would like to display their information. Choices included diorama, mobile, poster, written report with an illustration, pamphlet, and flip book. Students then presented their habitats to their classes and a small enrichment group was pulled to continue their project with our ITRT and me. Additional technology resources were then used. Students were able to choose from Chatterpix, Book Creator, or PicKids to incorporate their current projects and broaden their presentation. Final projects were shared to the entire school through morning announcements.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students completed their research and projects independently. However, they presented their projects to the class and shared their research with one another as part of their required task.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students had to be innovative as they researched, designed and constructed a representation of the animal’s habitat. They also had to choose the best digital tool that would illustrate their idea. The reflection at the end of this project helped students see their roles as critical thinkers and problem solvers.
