Lesson Summary

Achieving SOL accreditation at this school is an authentic task that must be a primary focus in all instruction. This lesson was designed to aid in that mission while allowing for creativity and innovation while the students reviewed and helped other students review subject matter. This lesson reviewed the important people and important battles of the Civil War. Using software and web-based tools of their choice, the students created multi-media publications to not only reinforce their knowledge of the subject matter, but also to assist other students in the school, the county, and globally as well.

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Although the students chose their own groups, established their own rules (norms), and selected their own roles, this category wasn’t the focus of the lesson.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The students selected their digital tools and engaged in critical thinking and problem solving as they used the tools to create multi-media review projects to help other students prepare for the important SOL tests. Using the survey on the library Google site, the students reflected on their critical thinking and problem solving to solve this authentic task.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The students synthesized existing and self-generated knowledge to create new product within the assignment parameters. They were also highly encouraged to pursue relative ideas that generate products outside the assignment parameters. They reflected on the creative/innovative process and set goals for future growth using the survey located on the library’s Google site.
