Building a Boat that Floats!

Teacher(s) Name: Mrs. Hadd

School: Maybeury ES

Grade Level(s): Kindergarten

Content Area(s): Science, Children’s Engineering

Lesson Summary

Students researched what causes objects to sink and float. They collected their findings in research journals. Students examined various common materials and classified them according to their buoyancy. Students then designed a boat using various materials. They then used Educreations to explain their blueprints and final boat creations. Finally, students used Google Hangout with another classroom to test their boats and elicit feedback from the partner classroom.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating:Developing – Explanation: Students applied search techniques demonstrated by the teacher by viewing and reviewing flipcharts and videos. Students responded to the class assignment (building a boat) that prompted analysis of information.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students were assigned a group by the teacher, but within those groups, the students collaboratively established their own norms and roles to accomplish their task. Students then communicated with a group of “experts” in another classroom across the county using digital tools. After testing their designs, students evaluated their work as a group as well as individually and discussed how they could improve their teamwork and/or their designs in the future.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students responded to a purposeful question: Can you make a boat that floats? Students had to justify decision-making and/or problem-solving practices. Students applied digital tools (iPads – Educreations app and Google Hangout) to demonstrate their critical thinking and problem solving for the authentic tasks that required higher order thinking skills.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students used their research to analyze trends and make predictions that inspired their own solutions to the authentic task of constructing a boat. Students created meaningful, original work within the assignment parameters.
