Summary
It’s a fish eat fish world out there. These 5th grade students have decided to brave the waters to learn more about the ocean animals and what they might like for dinner. The students were presented the task of creating an interactive food chain. In small, student selected groups, the students researched ocean habitats. Throughout the research portion of the lesson students utilized online resources to gather the information needed to create their interactive food chain. The students created pictures of their ocean food chains using Pixie and recorded videos explaining each step of the food chain using the Dell Webcam. To bring everything to life the students linked their videos into their food chains using ThingLink. After sharing their projects through a shared Google Doc the students reflected using a Google Form.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The teacher acted as a guide throughout the research portion of this lesson. The students developed their own research questions to propel their research. Throughout this process the teacher facilitated and aided in selecting the tools and resources that the students needed for successful research.

These students also reflected on the process of communication and collaboration at the end of the lesson. The teacher facilitated communication and collaboration by allowing students to select their own groups and choose which tools to use.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The students used the digital tools to promote critical thinking and problem solving. Throughout the lesson the students justified their decision making, and they reflected on the process at the end of the lesson.
