Summary

Decimals are a key component to everyday life. Students are charged with being critical thinkers and problem solvers to figure out different authentic decimal dilemma by working collaboratively with their peers. They are then tasked with extending their knowledge about decimals through the creation of a product that required higher-level critical thinking skills.

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: This lesson falls into the approaching category for communication and collaboration. Students were required to select their own groups, organize roles and establish group norms before beginning their assignment. They then collaborated throughout the assignment with their groups to complete the critical thinking task that was given to them.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This lesson falls into the ideal/target category for critical thinking and problem solving. Students were required to question, think critically and use problem solving strategies based around decimal dilemmas. They then used used the information that they gained through this work to develop their own products to charge others to think critically about decimals. THe students also reflected on their roles as critical thinkers and problems to help them set goals for the future.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This lesson falls into the ideal/target category for creativity and innovation. The students were charged with synthesizing existing and self-generated knowledge in order to create a new product to charge others to think critically about decimals. Students are supported by the teacher to take risks and make choices about how they would like to create their product and share their information. Students are also asked to reflect on their roles as creators and innovators.
