Yellow Journalism – 7564

Summary

Students will be looking at an important event from World War I from the perspective of an investigative journalist. They will dig deep to find out the truth about the events and then shock the public with outrageous claims in their newspaper articles. They will take the reality of the event and use language that will evoke an emotional reaction in their readers.

TIPC Ratings

The teacher guided students in researching WWI online. Students were allowed the choice of where they found their information but many utilized history.com. Students then had to construct questions in order to guide their research. They then had to organize their information in order to write a newspaper article in the style of “yellow journalism”.

The teacher will guide student research and instruct students on whether or not their choice of site is a good one. The teacher will give students the allowed digital tools to complete this project. The students will be working independently on this project so they have a clearly defined role as to what needs to be done.

The teacher will monitor and support student performance and guide students as they encounter challenges in their work. The students will use digital tools to answer the critical thinking questions they have posed to themselves. Students will then utilize that information to create the newspaper article in the ‘yellow journalism’ style.

The role of the teacher here is to monitor and guide but not instruct. Students will have to synthesize their research in order to complete the task. They will also be using their critical thinking skills in order to write the article in the style of “yellow journalism.” Their ultimate product will be informative and meaningful but also contain their original style and creativity.
