Still Life in Memoriam – 8011

Summary

7th grade art students will examine artwork from various cultures and time periods that deals with the subjects of death and memorials. Students will identify the common characteristics of these artworks and then design and draw a still life in memory of a loved one.

Research and Information Fluency was at the Approaching level. The teacher guided students to make observations of provided artwork to begin to synthesize what critical elements they needed for their personal creations. Students were further encouraged to find and evaluate other sources of artwork on the internet for new ideas and to make deeper connections to the topic. Teacher also facilitated class discussions to bring in how this type of art is influenced by the cultures in which they are created.

Students were given the opportunity to work together during the observation of elements of artwork and compare during the class discussion on Day 1. Students also provided opportunity to share their work with peers and communicate their choice of style and objects

Students and Teacher performed at the Approaching level in this area. In the class discussion, the teacher provided examples of artwork having to do with the topic of memoriams. Students made observations and responded to questions that made them think about specific elements in this type of artwork and did this digitally through a student response system – ActivEngage.The teacher led the students to make further connections as she collected and displayed student observations in a Wordle or word cloud. As students created their original works, they had to justify the decisions they made to create their final artwork.

Students created original and personally meaningful work based on the trends they synthesized in the opening discussion. Students collaborated together to make observations of this type of art from different cultures. Students had to think critically to apply what they had learned and to present that new learning in an original work of art. Students were able to justify their choice of objects in their work and also reflect on what they had created as they shared their pieces with their peers.
