Shapes in Our World – 8006

Summary

Seeing objects from a different perspective and categorizing them to make deeper understanding can seem like a very undaunting task to students. In this lesson, students in our Functional Integrated Services program used everyday motivating items to learn mathematical 3D shapes and their characteristics. Students then used iPads to collect visual copies of objects that possessed those characteristics and classified them as such.

Students and teacher performed in the Target level as this was a focus of the lesson. Students had to work through generalizing everyday objects and justify why an object was a certain type. The use of the iPad allowed for students to justify their choices and reflect on what other objects may be that same shape as they cannot do this auditorily. The teacher continued to engage students in meaningful situations that allowed them to critically think about the shapes and their learning outside the school building. Generalization is a big area of focus for students in the Functional Integrated Services classroom, so for them to be able to go out in the school or in public, during Community Based Instructional outings and identify the shapes is a big accomplishment and displays deep critical thinking skills at work.

This skill is rated at Entry as it is not the focus of the lesson.
