Mining for Melodies – 8003

Summary

Inside the deepest darkest crevices of some of our most popular literary works, catchy phrases and simple words and names are musical themes, melodies and entire songs waiting to be uncovered. In this lesson, students journey through their favorite poems to find the melodies waiting to be mined.

Students were given the opportunity to utilize the internet or library to find their poem or short story and to define any unknown words.

Students with musical background assisted students lacking this knowledge through the process. Students were given the opportunity to critique their peers during the public performances providing an opportunity for students to reflect on their creations.

Students were asked to digest higher level questions as they worked through their literary works. Students also had to adapt to new software and ideas especially with a lack of musical knowledge in order to complete the project.

Students used guidance from teacher experience to digest their poems and make connections with the literary work’s inner melody. Students analyzed trends within the work then applied their knowledge to the creation of an original work that would compliment the live performance reading. This area was a focus of the lesson.
