I’ve Got Rhythm! – 7241

Summary

Students explicitly explore the verbs associated with higher-level thinking and 21st Century Skills in the area of patterns. Students will then extend their knowledge of patterns beyond the numerical and geometric to the world of music. Students will first attempt to identify rhythms, and then collaborate to create rhythmic patterns. They ultimately connect to the real world by listening to a musician perform live for them while they apply their knowledge of rhythm-based patterns.

This lesson focuses on hands on information gathering as students create rhythmic patterns then attempt to identify their patterns recorded in Garage Band.

The students sort themselves into groups and collaborate on the creation of a rhythmic pattern. They offer critiques of other groups. They meet with a live musician who demonstrates and discusses rhythmic patterns.

Students think critically about how to create pattern challenges. Students think about what other things in life have rhythms to them and compare and contrast them with musical rhythms

Students attempt to create patterns that will challenge their classmates to use higher-level thinking. In self-directed small groups, students create and perform their own rhythmic patterns.
