Summary
How long have you waited for the school bus? How could we fight a war with fewer casualties? Is there a cure for Parkinson Disease? These were some of the questions our students had. How would you research your passion? Through this project, students are pursuing the topic of their interest and creating a product that either reflects what they have researched or are building prototypes that would support their research.
To capture the student’s interest in the project, the students were presented with a video of innovative ways technology has been used. To start the project, students were given time to brainstorm and complete a planning form to guide their research. Students were exposed to different options for how they could create their presentation/product/research/how to communicate their research, such as Prezi, SketchUp, ActivInspire, and using the Xbox Kodu application. Students presented their topic to a teacher panel to gain feedback. ActivEngage was used as an electronic sticky note as a way for peers to ask higher level questions they had about the displayed topic, which further helped to guide their research.
TIPC Ratings
The students were researching a topic based on interest, and deciding how to take that information and use it to solve a problem. The internet and technology presentation tools were valuable resources.
Students shared questions in the Active Engage activity, discussed roadblocks and progress with the teacher panel, received feedback during peer presentations, which they documented on Google Docs, and shared the final presentation among peers and teachers. Students also communicated with experts from their field of interest and used their knowledge and insight to guide their investigations and presentations.
Finding a solution to an everyday problem was a key part of this project. Reflection feedback was also given from the audience after the final presentation.
Students synthesized current knowledge and new research information in order to create a solution to a problem, displaying the information using a technology tool.
