Scrapbooking the 20’s and 30’s

Summary

In this assignment students develop a historically accurate character that will experience the historic events of the 1920s and 1930s. The student will see the events of the era through the eyes of the character as they create a journal and then a scrapbook. A partner is added into the mix so the students can see how various demographic groups experience history differently. Throughout this project students will rely on their creativity and the knowledge gained during the unit to relate to the culture of the 1920’s and 1930’s . Students will also refine their research and critical thinking skills. Finally, students will analyze how various demographic groups are treated in contemporary American society.

TIPC Ratings

The teacher modeled search strategies and effective use of the information to make decisions when creating their character. Students were instructed to analyze the information found about different demographic groups in the 20’s and 30’s to create a character to represent the time period. Students were challenged to use their research to interpret their characters perception of different journal topics.

Students were paired up based on their randomly drawn characteristics to create a scrapbook incorporating both characters. Students created a plan to merge their character’s stories to develop a cohesive scrapbook of events. Students reflected with their partners to ensure the product met all the requirements expressed by the teacher. Students also evaluated the collaboration with their partner so both students were held accountable for sharing responsibility for creating the work. Students evaluated their peers and provided feedback based on the assignment parameters.

Students were to think critically about their character and how the specific characteristic chosen would impact decisions on occupation, education, etc. The teacher presented scenarios which students had to analyze respond through the viewpoint of the character created. Students justified decisions related to their character when completing the demographic sheet. Students reflected as on their journal entries about the different experiences of their characters.

Student synthesized their research and journal responses to create a unique scrapbook in the voice of their character. Students were also challenged to use pictures of the time period and edit the photo to overlay their own face. Students reviewed other scrapbooks to gain an understanding of how those characters experienced the 1920’s – 1930’s and provided feedback based on the task rubrics.
