Thanksgiving Math – 4280

Summary

Using ActivEngage, students worked collaboratively to solve real-world math problems that they would encounter when planning a Thanksgiving meal. The students had to think critically as they strategized to solve the questions and make connections to math concepts in everyday life. The the teacher incorporated several multi-step problems using video clips at the grocery store. These clips incorporated various strands of the fourth grade math SOLs.

This lesson is Developing in the strand of Communication and Collaboration. The students worked collaboratively to solve real-world math problems associated with a grocery store. Students were given several opportunities to work together to develop answers and communicate their ideas through written responses using ActivEngage. In order for this lesson to move to Approaching in this strand, the students should self select their groups of two or three.

This lesson is Approaching in the strand of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. The teacher utilized the authentic task of shopping for a Thanksgiving meal at the grocery store and filmed each multi-step word problem. The students were posed with higher order questions and given time to discuss before sharing their responses on ActivEngage. The teacher used these student generated responses to spark discussion and further problem solving. The students were asked to reflect upon the lesson and how they could utilize problem solving the next time they were at the grocery store.

Creativity and Innovation was not a focus of this lesson.
