Dog Pen Problem – 4270

Summary

Students were given the authentic task of building the largest play area for a dog pen. “Class, Mrs. Brooks’ dog Ryker has chewed a hole and dug through his existing fence. This has caused a huge problem because he is going after her chickens. Your task is to design a new play area for Ryker using 16 feet of fencing.” Students will use ActivInspire to work through this problem. Students will explain their rationale to the class for their solutions. Students will reflect upon their learning using an online self-evaluation form.

This lesson is lower Approaching in Communication and Collaboration. Students worked in self-selected pairs to solve an authentic task. The students were asked to reflect on their ability to work with a partner.

This lesson is Ideal/Target in Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. Students were given the authentic task of creating a dog pen with a perimeter of 16 feet. They were challenged to find a model that also provided the greatest area. The students were asked to reflect on their work and summarize how they determined their answers. Partners shared their problem solving strategies with the class.

Creativity and Innovation was not a focus of this lesson.
