School: Hungary Creek Middle

Summary

This lesson focuses on real world uses of three dimensional shapes by allowing the students to demonstrate their ability to measure and solve volume and surface area problems. Through the use of Sketch Up students will take a virtual tour of the tallest building in the world. At each site pairs of students will collaborate to measure, record and find the surface area of each building. This data will help the students decide which buildings would be suitable for a mock scenario where they are applying for a job as an Environmental Artist Team at “Game Media Corp”.

TIPC Ratings

Developing-Students researched to discover information about the real world, 3-D structures they manipulate and evaluate in this lesson. Multiple strategies were used, such as Google reverse image search and keyword searching in the SketchUp 3-D warehouse.

Developing-students worked in pairs and determined group norms in order to complete the assignment.

Approaching-Students used a real world digital tool (Sketchup) with accurate scale models of real structures to solve this open-ended task. Their work was justified by answering the critical thinking questions included in the student packet.

Developing-Students used their creativity skills to generate new ideas as they made recommendations for video game design.
