“Un Lugar Artístico” (An Artistic Space – Creating a Space Inspired by a Hispanic Artist) – 5320

Summary

Students, tired of the same old scene here in Richmond, are opening a new space (shop, store, park, etc.) with a different look. Opening a new business is an expensive venture, so they need some money from investors to get started. They have an opportunity coming up to present to a potential group of investors, but this particular group is very involved and interested in art. To appeal to this specific group, and since the students already have some Spanish background, they decide to design their space completely based on a Hispanic artist. The final product will be their presentation that they will make to the investors conveying the idea of their space, including specific elements that will be featured that are inspired by their Hispanic artist. Students will then have an opportunity to act as the investors, review peers’ presentations, and decide to which company they would allocate their money.

TIPC Ratings

Students selected both the sources they used for information (including determining its reliability) and the tool they were going to use for their final presentation. They assembled, organized, and synthesized this information to address an authentic task, and used their tool to display their information to the investors. Through all of this, the teacher acted as the facilitator and assessor of the task.

While the team formation was random, the students were responsible for organizing roles within these teams to address the task. They also had the opportunity to use appropriate digital tools to facilitate their collaboration. Lastly, they were asked to reflect on and evaluate their role within their group as a communicator, among other group responsibilities.

Students were asked to justify their decisions about elements to include in their space, tying that decision to information they found through researching their artist

The students synthesized knowledge to create a meaningful, original product (their space) both within and beyond the assignment parameters set by the teacher. They had the freedom to design their space however they wanted, and were encouraged to be creative and original as they chose their design elements and how they related them to facts about their artist.
