Civil War Newspaper

Summary

Through our study of the Civil War, we study the causes, the battles, the effects, and the general way of life during the Civil War Era. For this activity students worked in groups and were given a Google Doc newspaper template. They were to incorporate various elements of a newspaper that reflect the Civil War era. Together they were to decide which members would write each newspaper element. They had an edition of the 1865 Daily Dispatch as a primary source document, various websites, and OneSearch available to research. After researching each member added their pieces to the Googe Doc template to make a complete edition of a newspaper. Students were to write from the perspective of citizens of Richmond of the time exhibiting real life issues of the time. Upon completion students reflected on the helpfulness of each website and any problems they encountered during the project. Students are researching, collaborating, problem solving, and creating.
