Summary
Shopping is definitely one place that students in Geometry classes do not expect to use set relationships. In this lesson students will use a three circle venn diagram to shop for electronic devices. They will research products within a given price range, compare those products by creating a set relationship, and compose five questions based on the data that they collect.

They will then generate questions to guide that research and acquire the information about products from websites of their choosing. The sites were selected based on prior knowledge (ie Verizon) or by using Google (or another search engine of their choosing) to search for a specific product. Students will then collect data for 20 different products and enter that information on the Google Spreadsheet in order to determine the best device to purchase based on the criteria they set.

Students work as a team to research specific devices and categorize them according to their “must haves” using a spreadsheet in Google Docs. They then take that information to create their venn diagram, questions and answers.

The teacher has developed a lesson where students will demonstrate their understanding and use of set relationships and logic. Students will use ActivEngage, Excel in Google Drive, and ActivIInspire to complete the task of shopping for a new electronic device. They will determine three “must haves” and compare 20 products based on their choices using a triple venn diagram. They will then develop and answer 5 logic questions based on their research.
This lesson scores approaching for both teacher and student. The final product of this lesson has students create an original venn diagram based on their research into specific products. They will then create questions from that diagram, that mimic those they have used in class, to demonstrate their understanding of set relationships and logic.
