Jamestown Journey – 4538

Summary

Students participated in a variety of stations that incorporated hands-on activities, technologically enhanced assignments, and numerous possibilites for students’ problem solving techniques to learn more about life in Jamestown. The lesson was focused on our recent trip to Jamestown, VA and shared correlating ideas from the field trip and in class learnings.

TIPC Ratings

This lesson was a follow up to the Jamestown unit. Students relied on information from class as well as what was learned from their visit to Jamestown, so research was not a major component of this lesson.

This lesson falls in the Approaching range for Communication and Collaboration. The students worked in small groups to collaborate to solve a task. The students communicated their results and reflected on the task through the use of a Google Form at some of the stations. Students used the flipchart provided to generate discussion amongst their group.

This lesson falls in the Ideal/Target range for Critical Thinking & Problem Solving. The students were challenged at all of the stations to solve a problem, create a product, and/or reflect of the task. At the campire games station, students had to apply a great deal of critical thinking in order to solve the puzzle without using the directions. They justified and reflected on their problem solving practices on the Google Form. Students also had to use problem solving skills at the archaelogist dig station in order to determine what the item was and who in the Jamestown settlement may have used this item. Ideas were shared on the Google Form.

This lesson falls in the Approaching range for Creativity and Innovation. The students created meaningful, original flipcharts using pictures taken during their field trip. The students also had to be creative in writing a conversation that may have occurred between the settlers and the Indians. Finally, students were very creative at the campfire games station where they had to continually analyze what was happening as they attempted to play the game/puzzle and come up with new, creative solutions to solve the problem.
