Three Tribes at the MSIC

Summary

Students will be challenged with a task of designing brochures for the Math Science Innovation Center (MSIC) to advertise new Native American classes being offered. Students will be given the option to either join the Model Builders group or the Brochure Makers group. Within each category students will then group themselves into 3 tribes, Pueblo, Lakota or Powhatan. After students select their own groups they will use various digital and print resources such as PebbleGo, the class Blog, interactive Social Studies Notebooks, and non-fiction Social Studies texts to fully research their tribe. Model Builders will use open ended questions about environment, occupations and region to work collaboratively and decide how to best create a display to cover all of the information. The idea is that the brochures will advertise the classes and the models will be used as teaching displays at the Math Science Innovation Center during the classes. Students will work with their group to assign jobs and work through problems. Brochure Makers will debate how to best format, and choose pictures to insert that will illustrate the text in their brochure. In the end all members of the group will work together to create a complete brochure and model to present to the class.

The students were given some higher order open ended questions and had to solve an authentic task. Students were expected to explain HOW they made decisions as Brochure Makers when the class examines each brochure. Students were engaged in justifying and defending their decisions made in representing the information as Model Builders.
