Summary
The students will be using a news article to identify the text structure of persuasive writing, locating information to support opinions, predictions, and conclusions, and distinguishing between fact and opinion. Students will work with a partner analyzing the article, determining the author’s purpose, and whether the author was successful in stating his or her opinion about cell phone usage.
Students will individually form their own opinion about cell phone usage while driving and post their opinion on a classroom blog. Students will respond to their classmates’ opinions through blogging.
For the culminating activity, students will work in a group to create a presentation reflecting their
opinions concerning cell phone usage. Students will work together to research online about cell phone usage while driving. Groups will then use their research to present their opinions in the form of a news cast, commerical, or song using photo booth.

Students used Safe Search to find information to support their opinion. The information was then used to convince high schools students of their opinion by creating PSA videos and posting them on the blog.
The students chose their teams and used blogging and photobooth to share their opinion about texting and driving.
Students chose their side of the issue and had to use research to justify their opionion on a problem that affects many young drivers.
The students worked within a group to create a presentation that reflected an opinion about a real world problem.
