Where In The World are Ratios?

Summary

Students will work in groups (3-4 students) to complete three stations that involve real-world application of ratios. One station incorporates the research of specific ratios within sports, as well as having students create their own ratios using statistics from their favorite sports team and athletes.
The second station involves ratios within art by mixing food coloring to create specific colors, as well as having students create and name their own colors and recording them on a created GoogleDoc.
The third station incorporates ratios in the classroom. Students will use a camera to find various ratios, as well as create their own problems using their own photographs. Throughout all three stations, students will communicate and collaborate together to complete the assignment.

TIPC Ratings

(Station 1: Ratios in Sports) Using found research information on the past two seasons of their chosen sports team, students will assemble and synthesize the data to predict the team’s success in their upcoming season. Groups will select the most appropriate search engines and websites to find reliable data.

(Station 2: Ratios in Art) Students will use digital tools to communicate among their group, their class, and other classes, using GoogleDoc. ActivInspire and digital cameras are other digital tools used in this assignment. Students establish their own group and choose a leader.

(Station 3: Ratios in the Classroom) Students will apply digital cameras to think critically in order to find examples of ratios within the classroom. Then, students will use their photographs to generate ratio problems, which include the essential questions listed above.

(Station 2: Ratios in Art) For the last two problems in this station, students will create original colors by mixing chosen number of food coloring drops and basic colors (red, yellow, blue, green). In Station 1: Ratios in Sports, students will analyze trends of a chosen sports team within their last two seasons, and use that information to make a prediction of the team’s success in the upcoming season.
