Summary
Student small groups get Triggy with right triangle trigonometry. Using a tape measure, an iPad and yes…there’s an app for that: CLINOMETER HD, students construct right triangles that can be used to solve for the heights of different things such as flag poles, trees, etc.
TIPC Ratings
Developing — Students apply search techniques demonstrated by the teacher. Students determined the accuracy of the information using digital tools. Students respond to class assignment that prompts analysis of information.
Approaching — Students form teams and organize roles to address the authentic task of using Trigonometry to measure tall objects around campus and create presentation of results for class.
Approaching — Students justify decision making through their multimedia presentation of their data. Students use the iPad and the Clinometer app collect data, use Trigomoetry to process their data and their presentations to prove their equations and reflect upon their work.
Developing — Students work on class assignments that blend technology and limited aspects of personal choice to calculate the right angles used to measure large objects around campus. Students also question, summarize and make predictions on existing knowledge using provided digital tools. This lesson would be higher if students had more choice in what they measured.
